The scanned images do not do these winning pieces justice. We have nine winners. The artwork was divided into color and black and white categories in two different age groups; one group involved the young adults in grades 6-8, and an older group of participants in grades 9-12. So there were 4 first place winners, 4 second place winners, and an overall grand prize winner.

The winners of the 2011 Anime/Manga Art Contest have been notified. (If you haven't been called or emailed yet, then you're not a winner. Don't despair--the same contest will probably be offered next summer. You'll have another chance to win some great prizes!) If you want to see the winners and some the loot, you are all invited to a brief awards ceremony this Sat., Aug. 6th at Liliha Library. Our judges, Jason Yadao and Audra Ann Furuichi, will be on hand to help award the prizes. Also attending is Roy Bann, senior administrator of Kawaii Kon. And yes, that means prizes from Kawaii Kon.

I'll posting the winning entries online and at Liliha Public Library. The program incorporates various elements within the slam poetry framework including storytelling, movement, hip-hop, and theatre. Slam poetry is a modern day form of performance poetry. It has succeeded where traditional methods have failed by making poetry accessible and relevant to students, and by giving them a voice to express their frustrations, identities, and dreams. This combined with his Japanese and Korean roots, gives him a unique perspective to tell cultural tales and personal stories with a deep sense of reverence and authenticity. Not only does he breathe life into traditional Asian folktales with sensitivity and deep connection, but he can also touch into the fire of ancient Hawaiian legends and tell them with passion and respect. Alton also enjoys telling true stories of the Japanese-Americans during WWII, but his true passion is telling ghost stories. He now resides in Washington State and is very excited to return to the islands to share his stories. Alton Chung is scheduled to perform on Oct. 13 at 3pm at Liliha Public Library.
